<p>The challenge for every organization is to progress through the first three stages (Early Struggle, Run and White Water), enter into Predictable Success and stay there. Many organizations fall backwards or progress too far in the model and end up failing.</p>
<p><em>My takeaway from this book is </em>that I need to be very aware of these business stages for each organization I am associated with. I need to challenge myself and other business leaders to make it to Predictable Success and then remain diligent to stay there and not slide backwards or forwards.</p>

<p>This is an excellent book that every person should read. Although it is especially relevant to business leaders, it applies to each of our personal lives as well!<span id="more-1260"></span></p>
<p>Sinek explains the philosophy of defining an organization&#8217;s purpose or reason for existing. He calls this the organization&#8217;s &#8220;Why&#8221;. This compelling reason &#8220;Why&#8221; the organization exists needs must be ingrained into the organization&#8217;s culture. Once an organization knows &#8220;Why&#8221; it exists then it can determine &#8220;How&#8221; to deliver on this and exactly &#8220;What&#8221; it will do to deliver the &#8220;Why.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong><em>My take-away from this book</em></strong> is that we should never market a product or business with WHAT is being sold. This drives the business towards becoming a commodity. Organizations must differentiate themselves like Apple and stand out from the masses by marketing WHY the world needs your company.</p>

<p>Todd Henry steps the reader through the process of, and importance of, discovering what makes each of us unique.  He calls this uniqueness the “authentic voice.” Each of us needs to devote ourselves to impacting the world with the uniqueness that only we possess.</p>
<p><em>My takeaway from this book</em> is that we need to find a “Sherpa” mentor. A Sherpa mentor is one that doesn&#8217;t just provide passive advice but is fully vested in the path to your success. If you succeed, they succeed and, if you fail, they fail . . . just like a Sherpa and a climber.</p>
<p>Also, Henry provided an effective template for getting feedback on your performance and to help you define your uniqueness. I have summarized this process below:<span id="more-1253"></span></p>
<ol>
<li>Identify five to seven people you’ve worked with closely and have seen you operate under pressure and at your best.</li>
<li>Ask them to give you three words that describe how they see you functioning when you are adding your greatest value and a brief description of why each of the three is significant.</li>
<li>Ask them; “what should I do more of?”</li>
<li>Ask them; “what should I do less of?””</li>
<li>Finally, ask them; “if you were to sum up my unique value in a sentence, what would it be?”</li>
</ol>

<p>Hyatt and Harkavy detail out the process of building a life plan &#8211; a balanced plan for your life that provides long term focus complete with the detailed goals required to get there. The book is well written with tons of examples and great online tools.<span id="more-1246"></span></p>
<p><em>My takeaway from this book</em> is that I need to refresh my own life plan so that I can live with purpose and leave a positive legacy. A Mark Twain says, &#8220;Let us endeavor so to live that when we come to die even the undertaker will be sorry.&#8221;</p>
