How to Deal with Monumental Change

I was recently reminded of how easy it is for leaders to lose sight of how much change their organization is experiencing.

One leader I spoke with has experienced a lot of downsizing in the last year and is now experiencing some very positive growth. Even though the organization is now well positioned for this growth, they are still reeling from the downsizing actions.

Another leader I spoke with continues to go through a downsizing process. Not only that but they are converting many of their staff to on-demand contractors. This is a huge cultural shift that impacts all aspects of the organization!

Brain Maker

The Power of Gut Microbes to Heal and Protect Your Brain–for Life

This week’s book review is Brain Maker by Dr. David Perlmutter.

In Brain Maker, Dr. Perlmutter builds on the research and recommendations in his previous book, Grain Brain. Where Grain Brain was more focused on the results of a grain based diet, Brain Maker focuses on the effects of a poor digestive tract microbiome.

The microbiome is responsible for the digestion of the food that we eat and the ability to properly convert that food into usable nutrients that our bodies and brains need. There is a big emphasis on adjusting our diets away from carbohydrates and towards healthy fats. Fats have been demonized over the last 30 years but without proper scientific research. The research now clearly indicates that healthy fats should make up a large part of our diets.

The Entrepreneurs Guide to Business Law

This week’s book review is The Entrepreneurs Guide to Business Law by Constance E. Bagley and Craig E. Dauchy.

This is a reference book rather than a traditional business book. You don’t need to read this cover to cover rather, you only reference the section that applies to the business and legal need at hand. It is a great reference manual that every entrepreneur and business leader should have on their shelf. The guide covers topics from incorporation to building a contract and from intellectual property to IPOs.

Real Artists Don’t Starve

Timeless Strategies for Thriving in the New Creative Age

This week’s book summary is Real Artists Don’t Starve by Jeff Goins.

Contrary to popular belief, many of the famous artists of the past (like Michelangelo) were not “dirt poor” but were very wealthy thanks to their art endeavors! Goins dispels the myth of the starving artist and then masterfully explains twelve principles that are required to develop a successful enterprise as an artist. I have briefly summarized these principles below.

REMOTE

Office Not Required

This week’s book review is REMOTE by Jason Fried and David Heinemeier Hansson.

REMOTE defines a business model that embraces a structure where employees do not work from the traditional corporate office. They can work from home, from Starbucks, while traveling, or pretty much anywhere that has high speed internet! It is full of great examples, ideas, tools and techniques to make the “remote employee” model work for any knowledge based business.
